do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab

t's a do-or-die match for Kings XI Punjab in this, the last lap of the league matches, and they could not have asked for tougher opposition. Yuvraj Singh and his men have been indifferent throughout the tournament and it will be up to the captain to rally his troops if they are to make giant strides from their current second-last position to a top four spot. But the going promises to get tougher with matches against the top tier teams still to come. The confidence from a win here could provide the fuel for the final push.

Delhi have been on song with near-flawless performances this season. They were outdone on two occasions by brilliant individual performances - succumbing to Shadab Jakati while chasing 164 versus Chennai and to Yusuf Pathan's late tornado while defending against Rajasthan. AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been magnificient in the middle order while the bowlers have backed them up suitably and played a big part in the team's success. Virender Sehwag's lack of runs and Gautam Gambhir's lack of authority at the top have been minor concerns for Delhi.

Only "DO" not "Die" For Both

Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals

It s a very important match for teams to cement their place in the semis.........One hand must win for Mumbai and on the other hand not to loose their last year image for Rajsthan and not to wait for climax.............Lets see who is Playing .........how?

It’s important for Mumbai Indians now, if they want to make it to the semis this IPL. Two straight victories have helped them gather the winning momentum which will be crucial for them to hold on as they face Rajasthan Royals today.

Mumbai Indians has to win all the remaining matches to ensure a spot in the semi-finals. Sachin Tendulkar and Jean Paul Duminy are the two players who hold the keys to MI’s success in every match. If one of them fires, MI finds themselves in better positions to pull off victories in crucial encounters. Along with them Dwayne Bravo has contributed significantly to propel the Batting Momentum of Mumbai team.

Duminy has been a dominant player for Mumbai and his good performance with the bat and also with the ball has helped MI win matches. Lasith Malinga’s swinging yorkers and Harbhajan Singh’s off-spins have contributed to improve the Bowling Efficiency . This could be their strength against an inconsistent of Bowling that Rajasthan Royals currently commands.

Rajasthan Royals generally rallies their performance around Yusuf Pathan. But when Yusuf fails with the bat, Rajasthan Royals finds it difficult to press for a win. Moreover, the absence of Shane Warne in today’s match (due to an injury) may adversely affect their BE in today’s match.

Stand-in skipper for the match, Graeme Smith has an impeccable record of leading South Africa in international cricket. But how far will he be successful in leading Rajasthan Royals in IPL remains to be examined today, considering the fact that a win today can bring Rajasthan Royals within striking distance of a semi-final spot.

Todays Match:Deccan Chargers Vs Delhi Daredevils

Deccan Chargers will be looking to brighten their chances of making the semi-finals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when they face table toppers Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday. Daredevils are almost through to the last four with 14 points from nine matches and a win against Deccan Chargers at the Kingsmead will only make them feel comfortable at the top. Daredevils are on a three-match winning streak and will like to carry the momentum against Deccan Chargers, who defeated defending champions Rajasthan Royals in their last match. For Daredevils, skipper Virender Sehwag will be back but his return will create some selection problems regarding David Warner's place in the team. Warner has been in good form in the tournament and the Australian will have to sit out. Daredevils stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir said: "I don't think if Viru was fit, David Warner would have fit into the XI. We have got some very good strokeplayers in the side. I don't think it's a headache, it's a plus thing for us, it's a bonus for our side. Having players like Sehwag, Warner and Tillakaratne Dilshan in the side is an advantage for us." Gambhir said that Daredevils are not thinking of the semi-finals and are taking each game at a time.

"There is not a lot of difference in the points table. It's very important to take each game very seriously and try and win each and every game. In this year's IPL there is no room for complacency. And I think it's important to carry the momentum. Twenty20 cricket is all about momentum. And once you get the momentum, just hold onto it," said Sehwag.
With Ashish Nehra, Pradeep Sangwan and Dirk Nannes bowling well, legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath is likely to warm the bench again.
Deccan Chargers are high on confidence after defeating Rajasthan Royals. A win against Daredevils will give them 14 points from 11 matches and that will obviously brighten their chances of making it to the semi-finals.

Deccan Chargers batting has been bolstered with the return of Andrew Symonds. Rohit Sharma has been performing well both with the bat and ball. But it will need an all-round performance by the Deccan Chargers to beat the formidable Delhi Daredevils.

Can Deccan break the winning momentum of Delhi?

Deccan Chargers vs Delhi Daredevils

May 13, 2009

Deccan Chargers will be wary of the superior Bowling Efficiency of Delhi Daredevils when they face each other in the return league today.

Deccan Chargers (DC) has bolstered their Batting Momentum (168) in the presence of Andrew Symonds. Symond’s (BM of 74) has anchored the middle order well and also provides an alternate bowling option. Hard hitting during the death overs by Dwayne Smith provides DC the stability in batting. Induction of Chaminda Vaas into the playing eleven has also strengthened the Bowling Efficiency (BE) of DC. RP Singh and the new found wizardry of Rohit Sharma will be exploited in this match too. The team, has thus, improved their performance with every match, as shown by the table below.

Table 1: DC Batting Momentum and Bowling Efficiency

Opponent vs RR vs KXIP vs MI vs CSK vs RR
BM 230 242 168 98 105
BE 339 169 256 46 203

Delhi Daredevils, on the other hand, can boast of a superior Bowling Efficiency (198). But Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes need to provide impetus to the low QuickStart Bowl (20) of DD which could play a significant role in restricting DC during the first 6 overs. The BM (184) of DD is heavily dependent on the good performance of David Warner and AB de Villiers. Their BM has dwindled in the last few matches which can be a worrying factor, as illustrated by the table below.

Table 2: DD Batting Momentum and Bowling Efficiency

Opponent vs KKR vs MI vs KKR vs CSK vs DC
BM 140 130 213 179 210
BE 252 325 76 244 252

It remains to be seen if DD can continue their winning streak against an improved DC.

IPL 2009 : Team ranking

IPL 2009 South Africa : Confidence boosters for Mumbai Punjab and

Winning is a habit. Return to winning ways will boost the confidence of Mumbai Indians, when they face Kings XI Punjab today in a crucial encounter.

Victory against Bangalore Royal Challengers in their last match may have done wonders to the morale of Mumbai Indians (MI) as it has not only improved their Batting Momentum (BM) and Bowling Efficiency (BE), but has also enhanced their chances of making it to the semi-finals. Harbhajan’s (BE 22) and Malinga’s (BE 53) return to form makes MI a formidable bowling side. However, it’s absolutely necessary for Sachin Tendulkar to fire on all cylinders for a steady batting innings for MI, though Jean Paul Duminy, Ajinkya Rahane were among runs in the last match.

Winning their last match against Delhi Daredevils must have done a world of good to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) too. But a low BE of 118 makes their bowling vulnerable. Strike bowler Yusuf Abdulla’s lackadaisical performances in the last 2 matches should be a cause of worry for KXIP. Performances of Irfan Pathan in the last two matches, where he notched up BEs of only 17 and 18, are also not inspiring for the team. But Brett Lee looks fit enough to make an impact again. Can they upset the rhythm of the MI batsmen? Winning this match is the only way for MI to stay afloat in this tournament, while KXIP will find itself in extremely difficult conditions if they lose this one.

Bangalore is in a favourable position

Bangalore Royal Challengers vs Kolkata KnightRiders

Match No :42 ,

Date 12-05-09

In a battle between the laggards of IPL 2009, Bangalore Royal Challengers finds themselves in a favourable position against Kolkata KnightRiders when they meet each other today in the return leg.

According to Castrol Index, Bangalore Royal Challengers (BRC) scores over Kolkata KnightRiders (KKR) not only in the overall Batting Momentum (BM) but also in the Bowling Efficiency. The table below shows how the two teams have performed in the bowling department in this IPL so far.

Team Wickets taken so far Team BE
KKR 40 106
BRC 50 129

It is interesting to note that though BRC have lost more wickets in this tournament so far, they have also captured more wickets than KKR. This propensity to take more wickets (than KKR bowlers) has put the team Bowling Efficiency (BE) of BRC at a higher plane.

In batting also, KKR is in a precarious situation as none of their batsmen has been consistently performing well in this tournament. The table below illustrates the performances of the batsmen of KKR vis-à-vis BRC’s.

KKR BM BRC BM
Brad Hodge 29 Jacques Kallis 31
Sourav Ganguly 30 Rahul Dravid 39
Morne Van Wyk 53 Mark Boucher 32
Yashpal Singh 12 Robin Uthappa 19
Wriddhiman Saha 23 Ross Taylor 22
Brendon McCullum 10 Shreevats Goswami 23

As the data suggests, barring Morne Van Wyk, all the other batsmen in KKR are having a poor tournament so far, which in turn has resulted in a low BM of 147 for the team. On the contrary, batsmen of BRC have been performing consistently which has contributed to BRC having a higher BM of 166 in the tournament so far.

IPL South Africa 2009:Deccan Chargers Overpowered Rajasthan Royals

Smith, Vaas, Rohit shine in Deccan win

Deccan Chargers vs Rajasthan Royals

May 11, 2009

Dwayne Smith, Rohit Sharma, Chaminda Vaas combined well to help Deccan Chargers thrash Rajasthan Royals by 53 runs.

Chasing a daunting Batting Momentum (BM) set by DC, RR batsmen had to set up the tempo from the beginning with a high Quickstart Batting (QS Bat). But DC bowlers, especially the highly experienced Vaas, kept it nice and tight to restrict the RR batsmen to a low QS, which added immense pressure to the middle order.

It proved to be quiet a task for RR, with Vaas and RP Singh of DC bowling with fire. Rohit then joined the party for DC, chipping in with his slow spin to pick up 3 wickets with a Bowling Efficiency of 150, as the pressure mounted on RR. Eventually RR folded up, managing a much lower BM than their average in the tournament..

If Vaas and Rohit were the stars of DC in bowling, Smith was the hero while they were batting. He destroyed RR’s bowling during the death overs helping DC smash 58 runs in those five overs, which made all the difference in the match. Smith’s BM of 69 also earned him the “Man of the Match” award.

Deccan well equipped than Rajasthan

Deccan Chargers vs Rajasthan Royals

May 11, 2009

Deccan Chargers will have more options to field players who are performing consistently well this IPL, when they face Rajasthan Royals today.

Though captain Adam Gilchrist has not been in the best of forms in the last 2 games, Deccan Chargers (DC) has enough ammunition to outsmart Rajasthan Royals on the field, according to Castrol Index. The table shows below the performance charts of the main players around which the two teams have rallied around the matches this IPL. The figures show the CIs achieved by the players in the last 5 matches they played.

Deccan Chargers

Name Average CI Match 9 CI Match 8 CI Match 7 CI Match 6 CI Match 5 CI
Adam Gilchrist 48 45 15 63 62 70
Herschelle Gibbs 38 31 71 48 56 63
Rohit Sharma 37 29 41 62 41 35
RP Singh 46 50 145 123 97 69
Pragyan Ojha 43 43 114 59 77 77

Rajasthan Royals

Name Average CI Match 9 CI Match 8 CI Match 7 CI Match 6 CI Match 5 CI
Yusuf Pathan 54 54 9 65 42 62
Graeme Smith 25 24 0 5 3 12
Ravindra Jadeja 39 40 12 15 20 20
Shane Warne 33 30 89 74 40 43
Munaf Patel 38 39 41 52 49 39

The table gives a clear indication that DC is equipped with players who’s average CI are better than those of RR.

DC becomes stronger when one considers Andrew Symonds and Dwayne Smith in the team. Symonds, who played his first match in this IPL, already notched up a CI of 100 and Smith has a CI of 65 from the 2 matches that he has played so far. Scott Styris also waits in the wings with a Castrol Index of 76, enough to disturb the rhythm of RR.

RR, on the other hand, will be missing the best all-rounder of IPL 2008, Shane Watson, who has been ruled out of this IPL due to an injury. Amit Singh, who has played only the last 3 matches for RR so far, is firing for them with a CI of 108, but it remains to be seen whether the regular players of RR can perform beyond their average in this match.
